Week 12 Food Storage Challenge

6 lbs of Shortening, lard or Oil / gelatin and pudding mixes.

I use lard to cook with since it is better for you then the hydrogenated shortenings but I do keep a little shortening and oil on hand. I use the oil in a spray bottle to spray the bottom of pans. The shortening I use in soap. As with everything be sure to rotate. If you plan to make your own soaps you might want to try and get a little extra.
Gelatin and pudding mixes. If you maker your own then get gelatin and cornstarch. You can go here to see how to make your own gelatin with either kool-aid or fruit juice. I buy my gelatin in bulk from bulk foods.co We don’t have the large warehouse stores here to by in bulk from so I have to order a lot of things like that. I will get a pudding recipe up soon.
Keep putting water up.
Add a little more to your cash reserves.
You might want to start picking up a few extra jars for canning season.

  1. Connie, I just wanted to wish you a Happy Easter. I just got caught up on your last couple of posts. Thanks for all the great tips! I did see the other day that coconut oil has a five year shelf life. I would like to put some back, but this is not cheap. But I love the stuff.
    Blessings, Roxy

  2. When baking, I use pureed beans instead of oil. It cuts down on the amount of oil I store. I don't deep fry anything but still use oil to make my own salad dressings. I do fry potatoes in bacon grease and/or butter. We like the flavor of bacon grease. Thank you for the challenge lists each week. I'm being reminded of a few items still to get but most of them I'm getting as they go on sale. Lately, I've been stocking my pantry with canned goods and dehydrated foods. Teri

  3. Connie, I just love all the tid bits you have on each post, but you have me a little curious on how you make soap with shortening. I would love a recipe to try and make that. What a great idea. I have been buying lard to put back also, but I do cook with olive oil and/or coconut oil. Much better than the shortening, but a bit more costly.
I hope you had a wonderful Easter!
    Take Care,
    Amy

Thank you for stopping by my blog.
You asked what I am storing for. There are several reasons why It is an insurance that if there is a job loss or natural disaster ( hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes major snow storms, droughts, solar flares )look at the east coast this winter, hurricanes & snow storms. And there are so many different things going on in the world that could explode at any minute N Korea ( nuclear bombs, emp, chemical weapons) the middle east, Europe, the collapse of the dollar which would usher in a great depression. Not to be a downer but there are so many things going on in the world right now, and if something were to happen I want to be able to feed my family. I have a few post in the preparedness and survival part of my blog that explains things a little more in depth. The is also a good article here
http://www.shtfplan.com/emergency-preparedness/time-to-plan-for-the-worst-rather-than-hope-for-the-best_03232013 So any way that is what I and many others are storing for.
look forward to checking out your blog
